The Balancing Act

When I was in my 20s and 30s and the kids were little, my life was a whirlwind of small child drop-offs to the childminder, commutes to central London for a long day’s work in a succession of glamorous, yet demanding, magazine jobs. Evenings were spent catching up with friends and Stressed Husband as well as fitting in bonding time with the children to see how their day had been without mummy. I was working full time – mostly from an office but after baby number two, as a freelancer from home. Yet I still made sure I was at every school event, the kids took part in lots of activity classes and I got involved and joined in regularly on the ‘mummy circuit’ in my local community. When I look back I remember being blissfully happy with my lot and I coped really well with such a busy life; working and having little kids was what I did and I just got on with it.

Feel Good Friday

Sometimes, life can feel as if you’re banging your head against a brick wall, wading through treacle or taking 2 steps forward 1 step back…And if it’s really bad, you can multiply those idioms by 10.

Sometimes, people say and do the most awful, unthinkable things to each other.

Sometimes, your soul withers a tiny bit when you realise just how much hate, anger, jealousy and despair there is in the world.ย 

And then…

Sometimes, strangers surprise you with a smile and a kind gesture.

Sometimes, human kindness shows itself as a remarkable force and evil can’t put up a fight against that power.

Sometimes, you take a deep breath in and breathe out the love that surrounds you and you smile as all the negativity gets washed away. Continue reading

Mango Spring/Summer 2014 – I’ll Take it All, Thanks.

Now that my winter sniffles have finally left, my nostrils are clear and free to twitch at the first scent of spring. Ahhh. And as the spring/summer 2014 Mango look book landed on my desk today, it wasn’t just my nostrils that went into overdrive – my mind was whirring with ‘I have to have that!’ and ‘My wardrobe needs that too!’ Now, I love fashion, always have, always will, but I’m not particularly stylish because I’m too lazy busy to get my act together most of the time – I’m all comfy, doggy walking boots and lipgloss – but when I scrub up, I do so quite well…even if I do say so myself. Of course, my idol, Joan Collins wouldn’t hear of such an excuse – you’re never too busy to be full out glam as far as she’s concerned and she’s right, of course. But because I don’t often try as hard as I should, I need clothes that make me look like I have and that’s where Mango come in – they’ve pulled off ‘effortless chic’ perfectly… Continue reading
